Weight Loss: GLP-1 Agonists

We are currently offering GLP-1 agonists Semaglutide (generic for Ozempic®) and Tirzepatide (generic for Monjaro®). GLP stands for Glucagon-like peptide. Glucagon is a key component in our body’s ability to regulate our blood sugar levels. GLP-1 agonists enhance insulin secretions by our pancreases, and insulin lowers blood sugar levels by driving the sugar into our cells.

Semaglutide

Semaglutide subcutaneous (under the skin) injections are recommended weekly as part of a weight loss regimen.  All patients are required to have an extensive laboratory panel prior to beginning therapy.  This lab evaluation includes a full review of your results with Dr. Yablonicky (Board Certified MD).

Semaglutide is a medicine initially developed for diabetes.  Brand names include Ozempic® and Wegovy®.  In addition to improving your diabetes labs, Semaglutide was found to have dramatic improvements on weight loss.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist. Your body reacts to the Semaglutide by decreasing our natural production of glucagon.  This slows gastric emptying (our stomach slows down).  Semaglutide also acts on the brain to decrease appetite.  The two mechanisms of slowing our stomach down and depressing our appetite cause patients to eat less and subsequently lose weight.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED INJECTIONS?

If it is determined that Semaglutide is appropriate for you, we begin with a once weekly injection at very low levels and gradually increase this over several weeks/months.  After 4 months approximately,  you will be started on a weekly maintenance dose or discontinue therapy if desired.

RISKS?

All medications have side effects.  Semaglutide’s main side effects are nausea, diarrhea, and low blood sugar.  At the lower injections amounts, these side effects are minimized.   Semaglutide causes broad spectrum weight loss, meaning you will also lose muscle in addition to fat.  Your provider will discuss ways to minimize this as maintaining muscle mass is critical to good health.

SEMAGLUTIDE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.  Please setup your laboratory evaluation and consultation with Dr. Yablonicky.  Often, there are other endocrine hormones that can be adjusted to help you obtain a healthier weight (thyroid levels, testosterone, etc) and feel your absolute best.
